Extract from letter from Messrs. Jardine, Watheson & Co.ltd. Hongkong,

dated 31st. August, 1912.

OPTON BUGGLING. We are much obliged to you for the statement of seizures of opium on board our steamera and for the coples of correspondence passod between

your goodsslves and the Collector of Customs, which have been rend with interest. It

is satisfactory to learn that steps are being taken to imposa more govore santancer

on the actual culprits. Te are rather surprised to nota from the letter written by

the Collector of Custoas to you on 20th. instant that the Customs have no knowledge

of the investigation made here by Mr. Williron some three years ago and that that

person is not connerbed with the Customs garvica, All we know is that on his

arrival here he presented papers and letters of introduction as a .. Customs

Official, which together our own written advices concerning his intended vialt,

was a sufficient guarantee for us to regard him as a "bone fide" Customs represent-

ative. It is somewhat ungatisfactory to us to learn that the Castors Authorities

now ignore the efforts that were made by us at the time to convince their om

representative that we were doing all possible to prevent the traffic, and to dis-

claim all knowledge of his visit to this port.

with

Te enclose for your information copy of a further joint letter we have
